Elon’s Holland House Moves Across Street

Discovered this story on Twitter this morning. Posted by: Carrie Hodgin

Elon, NC — Neighbors in Elon watched crews move an historic building Sunday. Movers relocated Elon University’s Holland House. The Historic home is now calling a spot next to Holt Chapel “home.”

The moving took place over two days but on Sunday they had to wait for the train to come through before moving the home across campus.

The Holland House served as home for two Elon presidents. University leaders also designated the home for classroom and office space. They’re still deciding on the home’s future use.

Wachovia – here we go again

From The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area:

Citigroup Inc. will acquire the banking operations of Wachovia Corp., according to an announcement from the FDIC. The announcement did not detail the terms of the transaction or the immediate operational impacts except to say that there will be no interruption in services for bank customers.

Wachovia moved its headquarters from Winston-Salem to Charlotte in 2001 following its merger with First Union. The company still maintains its Wealth Management division in the Twin City. The impact of the sale of banking operations on that division has not been announced.

Wachovia’s total Triad employment is 3,800 people.

Big Question? What impact will this have on Triad jobs and, subsequently, the Triad housing market?

Ramblin Rose 2008

Celebrating the empowerment of womenLast Sunday, August 24th, the Ramblin’ Rose Sprint Triathlon made it’s debut in Winston-Salem. Over 400 women from around the Triad entered the race. For most of them this was their first triathlon. The Ramblin’ Rose is one of a series of women-only triathlons in North Carolina that are geared to beginners. It is considered a “super sprint” triathlon with much shorter distances than a typical triathlon: only 250 yards of swimming, nine miles of bicycling and two miles of running.

The Ramblin’ Rose Sprint Triathlons, which are designed to celebrate the empowerment of women, bring together women of all ages and athletic ability, in a collective movement to inspire, support and propel each other to do even more than they thought possible. Steve Lackey, the publisher of Endurance Magazine, started the first Ramblin’ Rose in Chapel Hill in 2006.

A percentage of the registration fees from the Ramblin’ Rose Sprint Triathlons go to local Girls On The Run (GOTR) charity programs. Girls On The Run is a life-changing character development program for girls ages 8-12 that uses running to prepare young women for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The goal is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.

Here is a short video of a special group of women from our neighborhood pool who trained together this summer. Congratulations ladies! We’re proud of your accomplishments.

Wohoo! Apple Store to open in Greensboro!

Greensboro, NC Apple Store nearing completion

Let me say it again, Wohoo!

The long-awaited Greensboro Apple Store located at The Shops at Friendly Center is now underway.  No longer will us Mac lovers have to make the pilgrimage to Charlotte or Raleigh to bask in the glory! (I just made the trip last week with my 3 oldest kids to learn tips and trick for creating iMovies from the guys at Raleigh’s Crabtree Valley Mall Apple Store. One of my favorite blogs, TUAW.com (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) broke the story earlier today and had this to say, “[Greensboro's] AppleStore had a midsummer target to open, which seems optimistic bordering on impossible at this point.” It would appear that, “the delay in construction may have been the result of a proximity dispute; Apple is a bit picky about which stores can cohabit with the glass wonderlands, and now that the neighborhood is up to snuff the project is underway,” according to a commenter on the photographer’s blog.
